Description:
The iGEM Competition gives students the opportunity to push the boundaries of synthetic biology by tackling everyday issues facing the world. Multidisciplinary teams work together to design, build, test, and measure a system of their own design using interchangeable biological parts and standard molecular biology techniques. iGEM teams work inside and outside the lab, creating sophisticated projects that strive to create a positive contribution to their communities and the world.

Reflection:
4C YUEN P. Y. After participating in this programme, I have learnt a lot of things beyond textbooks, like genetic engineering, transforming gene of interest into the bacteria, etc. I am also lucky enough to do experiments that a lot of students may not even have a chance to do, for example, DNA electrophoresis. I have learnt how to write experimental procedures and the process of writing them which is so challenging. Also, I have learnt how to illustrate them step by step with the help of the teachers. What I have learnt is to keep trying and not to be afraid of failing. Overall speaking, I think this whole experience is very memorable. Not only have I learnt more knowledge in Biology, but I have also recognized the importance of teamwork. I had the rarest opportunity to genetically modify an organism, do experiments and write and read literature papers. It was such a fruitful experience. Last but not least, I have to express my gratitude to Miss Wong for giving me this opportunity to join the iGEM team. That was such an unforgettable experience and journey. |

5D CHEN H. K. I was over the moon when I got the chance to be a member of iGEM 2021 Hong_Kong_JSS Team. iGEM has led me to realize that science is a multifaceted discipline that encapsulates a wide range of study that I am intrigued to learn more about and discover. I am amazed and satisfied by what we have done in the past few months. The task was not easy, we made a lot of effort in the design of the project, modelling, research, detailed discussion, preparation of the materials, experimentation, measurements, product design and human practices etc. In research and experimentation, we faced failures. This phase is often filled with frustration, but this is actually what makes it great, as we have learnt how to solve the problems, how to iterate and how to persevere through the setbacks to strive for the results. Even sometimes the final experiment results were not the ones we expected. I also remember how once I received the posters and leaflets which were designed by us from the printing press, and what a memorable thing it seems to be when I have found our experiment photos imprinted. The iGEM experience helps to create mindsets that are critical to solving our global problems. Science is hard. Failure is just a beginning, it is a step in the process and that challenges are best approached through openness and shared community. |

5A RAZZAQ K. IGEM- a worldwide synthetic biology competition in which I couldn’t accomplish without my team members’ cooperation and efforts. I had a wonderful experience throughout this exclusive journey. I have definitely gained biology, specifically synthetic biology knowledge and experience from working all through the summer. Before commencing our project, we had to familiarize ourselves with the foundation of biotechnology like DNA fingerprinting, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to name a few. As it happens, whilst kicking off with our entire layout of our project (Detoxification of AFB1 in food), we still had to continue with our learning. Needless to say, we were all anxious in the presentation and the judging session but we made sure to answer the judges’ questions smoothly. Not to forget the helpful and dedicated teachers who assisted us in this entire project. I am really grateful to them for their support. I am so glad that I have decided to be a part in this project. Thanks to all the teachers who have made it possible and the students for being in the same boat with me. I will always remember this special experience. |
