Professor Lam Hon Ming is a specialist in Plant Molecular Biology and Agricultural Biotechnology. He and his team have decoded the genome of 31 types of soybeans. After over 10 years of rigorous research and fieldwork, they have successfully identified and cloned a major salt tolerance gene in wild soybeans. It is a milestone in the mass production of high quality salt-tolerant soybeans, a stage reached which will eventually benefit agriculture in China and worldwide.

He hopes to nurture the young researchers through teaching and to inspire more related research work through his experience with the aim of improving the human lot. He believes that the aspiring researchers can progress with his researches and accomplish even more to help the world. He is an amiable man and definitely inspiring.

Apart from listening to Prof. Lam’s sharing, we also had the opportunity to ask him some questions regarding synthetic biology. He also gave feedback on our IGEM project’s design on how we could make our design more effectual and other better alternatives.

We were honoured to meet a pioneer in the study of synthetic biology. We really enjoyed our time with him and learnt his life journey which wasn’t very smooth to achieve his final goal. He hasn’t stopped conducting more research and studying yet and isn’t planning to any time soon. We’re eager to learn about his new findings. Thank you for his time.
